This position would support GEI's growing national team of aquatic scientists and ecological and human health risk specialists, who support a wide range of environmental assessment, regulatory compliance, remediation, and R&D programs across the U.S.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

  • Bench-level analytical chemistry support for analysis of trace metals, mercury, PFAS, and other compounds in sediment, tissue, stormwater, groundwater, seawater. Experience with the following instrumentation and methods is required:
    • Analysis of trace metals using a Thermo Element XR high resolution inductively coupled mass spectrometer (HR-ICP-MS)
    • Analysis of total mercury (THg) in water per USEPA method 1631 on a Tekran 2600 and methyl mercury (MeHg) in water per USEPA method 1630 on a Tekran 2700.

    • Support senior staff with a variety of regulatory compliance assessment and R&D programs. Tasks may include: laboratory toxicity testing; environmental data management and summaries; QA/QC; statistical calculations; report preparation; literature searches and reviews in response to emerging needs; and other tasks as directed.
    • Support for proposal and cost estimate development.
    • Understanding of and willingness to comply with Health and Safety requirements, and development of Health and Safety Plans.
    • Understanding of and willingness to comply with Quality Assurance/Quality Control procedures and assist with development of Quality Assurance Project Plans.
    • Support the development of Standard Operating Procedures, other QA/QC documentation, and laboratory certification needs.
    • Understand and apply statistical software supporting data analysis. Familiarity with R, GraphPad PRISM, and ability to develop and apply macros in Excel a bonus.
    • Develop familiarity with and ability to support common field toxicology and risk assessment tools, such as toxicity and bioaccumulation testing/sampling, biological surveys, and passive sampling devices. • Work with multidisciplinary teams in a laboratory and field setting.
    • Participation in professional, industry, and/or policy groups is encouraged, as is a desire for professional development and advancement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or related field.
  • 1 to 5 years of progressive experience in the environmental field, focusing on environmental chemistry and toxicology.
  • Demonstrated excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with MS Excel spreadsheets and MS Access databases.
  • Ability to apply full-feature statistical software (e.g., R, GraphPad PRISM) preferred.
  • Ability and willingness for field work if needed.
  • Willingness to travel and spending some time at other GEI offices or DoD locations to work with teams on project issues as needed.
